Natasha Rothwell, widely recognized for her roles in “Insecure” and “The White Lotus,” finds herself being ‘number one on a call sheet’ for her upcoming Hulu series “How to Die Alone.” The show, which has been nearly a decade in the making, sees Rothwell wearing multiple hats as she co-runs, produces, and stars in this comedic half-hour series.
Rothwell’s character Mel, an airport employee nudged out of her habitual boredom by a close encounter with death, explores themes of loneliness, companionship, fear, and magical realism. The narrative also features a captivating love triangle that hints at Rothwell’s creative inspiration from Issa Rae, leading to the casting of attractive male counterparts.
Mel is portrayed as having several contrasts – she works at an airport but fears flying; she enjoys plenty of affection in her life yet struggles when expressing love verbally. Her job involves driving people around the terminals on a transportation cart; however far from viewing it as ‘dead-end’ or mundane work, Mel genuinely loves her task – an intentional choice made by Rothwell to highlight the intrinsic worthiness of every job role and banish any notion that these workers are not ambitious or visionary individuals.
Mel’s life-altering moment that sets everything into motion mirrors an experience from Natasha’s own life when she lost an acquaintance to cancer. This shock prompted Natasha to send emails she had long held back out of fear and signifies the moment she truly began to live without fear or regret.
Rothwell seamlessly translates this reel-life transformation into her real world too. She candidly discusses how this journey liberates her from being a pleaser all her life and encourages her to assert herself more frequently – even if it’s about trivial matters such as deciding where to dine. Just like clicking ‘send’ on those unsent emails helped Natasha bridge who she was with who she wanted to be.
Rothwell’s passion for this project transcends the on-screen narrative. She sees her show as an opportunity for people to acknowledge themselves in Mel and allowing it to act as a tonic against solitude and the catalyst for conversations about inner personal growth. The actors’ empowering message is that rather than posing solutions, she wants “How To Die Alone” to establish opportunities for conversation.
Alongside “How To Die Alone,” Natasha will also be reprising her role as Belinda in Season 3 of “The White Lotus.” Rothwell is excited at the prospects of delving deeper into Belinda’s story who was previously a sidelined character.
Ahead of the show’s premiere on September 13, Rothwell shares plans of celebrating by possibly getting a tattoo while presiding over celebrations. She transparently acknowledges her anxiety issues which often hinder fully partaking in joys as she fears they could disappear suddenly. Nevertheless, she dedicates herself to remaining present during these benchmark moments along with maintaining pride in herself – all making up her unique way of celebration.
