The allure and charm of rugs captivate the imagination. From my recent experience in preparing for an undisclosed rug collaboration, I’ve learnt about their diverse nature and the impact they have when placed thoughtfully in a space. Today, I share with you my journey to becoming a rug aficionado, as well as some tips to help you turn your spaces into a charming palette of textures and hues.
Growing up in a home devoid of rugs and filled with bare pinewood floors not quite stained correctly, my aesthetic senses were stoked. Little wonder that upon setting up my first space independently, I found myself trawling through car boot sales and charity shops across London to clasp each available rug in sight. This fervor took my housemates by surprise, especially considering their leanings towards graphic design; they weren’t quite prepared for the abundantly layered interior styles.
However, I believe that rugs hold an unmatched power – they can effortlessly transform any space. From adding visual appeal to insulating against the noise for irritable neighbors, the right pick can solve numerous decor dilemmas.
In this wide-ranging world of rugs where every imaginable size, shape, color and material can be found, making a choice could become overbearing. Always begin by identifying what you need from your rug – is it purely decorative? Is it tasked with hiding an unattractive floor? Once such basic specifics are settled upon, the selection becomes considerably more manageable.
My favourite style fallback is consistently flat weave rugs. Known for their durability and versatility due to being lighter than traditional carpets without compromising on aesthetics or quality. These go brilliantly with all manner of furniture – plus they look fantastic in practically any room situation – kitchen included!
For lovers of vintage finds such as myself: treasurable flat weaves are common at car boot sales or well-established dealerships. If luck would have it like me after almost a decade-long wait – finding an Iranian sofreh zigzag rug could steal your heart. Make sure you spare an envious glance at a cheeky ‘90s abstract wool masterpiece on your visits as well.
When it comes to hallways, flat weaves again reign supreme for pragmatic reasons who really wants a dirt magnet runner? Brands like Vanderhurd and Adam Bray offer colourful pattern combinations from which a border-style rug would definitely accentuate the length of your hallway.
The integration of the rug with its surrounding furniture is paramount to achieving an aesthetically pleasing space. Furniture should comfortably inhabit rugs; don’t shy away from placing chair legs or even entire dining tables on them. This interplay between rug and piece of furniture is also an opportunity to explore unique combinations such as round rugs beneath round tables – a truly striking sight!
In bedrooms, go ahead and indulge yourself in that shag pile rug you’ve secretly longed for. Yet if clean minimalism is more up your alley, then consider cut pile options. Not only are they neat but they add an element of textural contrast to any room’s decor scene.
For those willing to push the boundaries, leather rugs make for some intriguing bedroom flooring choices. They might just be what completes your stylishly audacious décor aspirations.
Remember, the charm lies in finding a balance between functionality and appeal when it comes to choosing rugs for your space. Don’t rush but take pleasure in this journey of discovery – it may just be one of the most rewarding aspects of home decor.
